cHEAP sWEATY fUN fLIER eXHIBITION

oPENING aT uPMARKET gALLERIES ‘pAINTING tO mUSIC / pEINTIO i fIWSIG’ eXHIBITION, sATURDAY mAY 3RD 2014, uPMARKET gALLERIES, nEWPORT mARKET, nEWPORT, gWENT, sOUTH wALES, UK…

So. In 1984, amidst Thatchers strangling grip of the United Kingdom, a group of likeminded individuals living in Gwent decided to start putting on a few gigs. They called their collective cHEAP sWEATY fUN. I’m sure that at the time it was, well, just a bit of cHEAP, sWEATY fUN. Not a lot in it, just some punks entertaining themselves, not for money, not for the kudos, just to give their skint selves a mission and have some fun. Punks and skaters have always been like that, people call them cliquey, but they just don’t subscribe to the bullshit and entertain themselves on the cheap instead. Obviously, there were other scenes the world over who were also doing the same thing at the same time, so gradually over time networking started to happen, foreign independent & punk bands touring were booked to play in Newport, all arranged by the CSF collective and gradually a reputation for solid gigs started to surround CSF. After a period of toing & froing between venues (namely the Stow Hill Labour Club & The Riverside), in 1987 cHEAP sWEATY fUN found it’s spiritual home at the Legendary TJ’s & quickly went about cementing the reputation that enabled it to call itself Legendary.

I arrived in Newport in October 1999, from my home town of Southport to study a degree in Photographic Arts at Newport University and still remember vividly my reaction on first walking into TJ’s, which, on looking at all of the gig fliers on the wall being ‘No fuuuuuuuuuccking way!’. Every single one of my favourite bands ever had played in the venue and I really just couldn’t believe my eyes. It wasn’t long before I met Simon Phillips & Beddis (being the record vulture that I was) at Rockaway Records and became a member of the collective myself, putting on about 50 gigs with Simon through the 200’s until I had to take a job on the post after my degree to pay the bills & could no longer commit. All in cHEAP sWEATY fUN put on 326 gigs between Stow Hill Labour Club, The Riverside, TJ’s & Le Pub before calling it a respectable day.

In planning this Painting to Music exhibition, the idea of presenting all 326 gig fliers, both as an installation & with an accompanying online presence for everybody ever involved was the first thing that sprang to my mind. Simon Phillips very kindly met me in Newport market with his 3 lever arch files full of fliers for us to photocopy every last one in order to facilitate me doing this and in doing so, like we used to when fliering these posters all around Newport, Cardiff & the Valleys, we talked about the experiences of doing the gigs. From The Pogues playing for beer & petrol money, Simon taking Gibby Haynes of The Butthole Surfers to B&Q in his Reliant Robin to buy two pin converters for all their amps as this was their first ever UK gig & they hadn’t thought of any of this being the trip heads they were, Gibby Haynes hanging out the window the whole way there trying to see the mystical third wheel of the Robin under the car in a state of disbelief, to fIREHOSE pissing on PWEI’s amps because they were being pricks. From Japanese punk band Tetsu Arrey eating fried chicken & throwing the bones like Genghis Khan to Man or Astroman? being spotted after their last gig scaling the walls of the castle at 4 in the morning tripping their tits off. From Captain Sensible chucking a hissy and turning a table full of food over after one of The Damned’s roadies ate the last vegetarian meal to Rick Simms of the Didjits asking me to hoover their coach and being told to do it himself. Baby sitting Mark E. Smith for the afternoon, all in a days work. The list goes on & on & on.

I’m ever so proud to have been involved in this, Newport is a fucking rocking town, full of creative characters that have a fine historical pedigree of ‘doing it for them fucking selves’ and long may it continue. And along the way, CSF & TJ’s played host to the first ever UK gigs by Sebadoh, The Lemonheads, Dinosaur Jr, Butthole Surfers and more. Thats legend right there.

So, without further a do, wherever you now live & whatever you now do, be you collective member, gig goer, band member or punk rock gig flier fan. Here & so far only here are the 326 cHEAP sWEATY fUN gig fliers in their entirety. A monumental achievement when you see them one after the other. So go grab a cider & reminisce over some of the coolest gigs in history.

Newport & it’s people, I salute you, thank you ever so much for the good times.

P.s. These fliers are copyright free, do whatever the hell you like with them, I’ve put them on at high resolution so they can be used.

And if you’d like to see them all at once in person, the exhibition opens Saturday May 3rd 2014 at 2PM in the Upmarket Galleries, Newport market.

This was our CBJB’s & it was just as good.Enjoy.

sIMON pHILLIPS owned & ran Rockaway Records in Newport Market for over 25 years, the shop being the hub of all CSF gig activity. Simon was the Mark E. Smith of the organisation, being the only constant of the collective for all 326 gigs. He still does record fayres the length & breadth of the UK, buying and selling all manner of records, cd’s & related paraphernalia.
bOB pONTIN(left) went to a lot of CSF shows and dEAN bEDDIS’S (right) groups Cowboy Killers, Las Vegas Elvis & Bad Sam played TJ’s/CSF shows more than any other band. When Simon decided to call it a day with Rockaway Records circa 2008, Dean took it over & renamed it Kriminal Records and is still trading on the same site today.

tIM cUNDLE & pETE wILLIAMS from Mass Movement, also attended a lot of CSF shows over the years, interviewing musicians at the gigs for their magazine. You can find them & their great online publication (downloadable as PDF) here:
