Painting to Music Exhibition Opening
Saturday 3rd May 2014

It was with a great sense of pride and relief that at five to 2 on Saturday the 3rd of May 2014, we (myself, Steven George Jones & Barrie Morgan) finished hanging the Painting to Music exhibition at the Upmarket Galleries in Newport. All hands had been on deck for the final week before the show, and gradually everything began to take shape.
I was nervous as hell and had been working constantly by this point for 3 months with arrangements for this, and the previous exhibitions painting, so come the actual 2pm gong, I was stood outside having a well earned tab.

Painting to Music flier by Ray Taylor
After a little bit of faffery regards the PA system we got underway, beginning with Len Massey of the London School of Art doing a Drawing to Music performance, backed by three quarters of Newport’s best kept secret, Ampersand. Within 5 minutes and for the next 45 minutes, Len had well over a dozen people of all ages on their hands & knees, drawing away on a giant roll of paper to the musical accompaniment of the band. You can watch a great video collage of this activity by Liam Taylor here:
After the big draw-off, there was a short break in proceedings in order for people to devour the vat of red lentil, chick pea & sweet potato curry that’d I’d made (and they did), before the quick-fire music quiz. After this was another performance by Len Massey with musical accompaniment by Ampersand, this time it was a show of Live Animation in the basement, which was then in turn followed by a Spin Painting performance art piece by Art Rat & Lesley Fav, which to be frank, caused a bit of a mess.
Q6: What is Art Garfunkel an anagram of?
We then packed our bags and left the gallery for the Empty Shops Project on Commercial Street, where we had annexed out the showing of Robin Mitchell’s MA film ‘Absence in Cambodia’ on the big screen, so off we went with our several bottles of white wine to see the film, happening also along the way on some cheap vodka!
All in, I have to say that curating my first exhibition was a very rewarding experience (although not without the odd hitch, particularly the one that involved my bicycle handlebars and a canvas). I couldn’t have done this without the invaluable assistance of Upmarket’s Steve Jones & Barrie Morgan, Simon Boughton, Dean Beddis, Steve Reynolds, all of the exhibiting artists & performers and Newport’s art lovers who showed up on the opening day to make it the resounding success that it was.

  1. Thanks for sharing this! Geez, that’s a lot of pictures. I love the signs and posters, though, they’re awesome. I really want to get something like that done for my friend’s event. He doesn’t get quite that much hype, though. Thiago |
